O horóscopo chinês também é associado aos elementos madeira, fogo, terra, metal e água. O horoscópo de uma pessoa, portanto, possui tanto um signo animal como um elemento. A Tradição Chinesa valoriza os horóscopos, e os casamentos às vezes são arranjados de acordo com signos compatíveis.

O horóscopo chinês segue o calendário lunar chinês, e o signo muda para o seguinte durante o Ano Novo Chinês, em vez do 1 de janeiro do calendário gregoriano.
