Hieróglifos
Até a descoberta de Champollion, acreditava-se que hieróglifos eram representações ilustrativas de palavras que elas representavam. Champollion provou que elas eram uma mistura complexa de ilustrações, sons fonéticos e letras alfabéticas, e que a linguagem do Egito Antigo é relacionada ao Cóptico, que ainda existe na Igreja Cristã Cóptica.
Hieróglifos são um tipo de escrita chamada de sistema de rebus. Usa símbolos emprestados para representar novas palavras com os mesmos sons, independente do significado original. Portanto ‘A gente se vê’ iria ser desenhado ‘Agente se vê’ por exemplo. Decodificando a linguagem do Egito Antigo, Champollion abriu um mundo de conhecimento.
