Mastaba

A palavra ‘mastaba’ vem do árabe para banco, porque os primeiros escavadores acharam que elas se pareciam com bancos locais. Nós não sabemos como os egípcios a chamavam. Feitos de tijolo de lama ou pedra, estes montes gigantescos cobriam câmaras de funeral que eram profundas e só eram alcançadas através de poços longos.
As pirâmides se desenvolveram da mastaba e, segundo a teoria, a primeira pirâmide de degrau de Djoser em Saggara era originalmente uma mastaba que tinha placas quadradas menores ao seu redor.
Há milhares de mastabas em todo o Egito, muitas delas ricas com pinturas de paredes. Ao contrário das pinturas nas pirâmides que só retratavam a vida da corte, estas pinturas eram uma grande fonte de informação para a vida diária.
