Os entomologistas têm sido usados em muitas ocasiões, durante investigações de assassinatos – o caso mais conhecido foi o assassinato Lydney, em 1961, em Gloucestershire, na Inglaterra.

A vítima foi encontrada durante o verão e estava completamente decomposta e cheia de larvas. O professor Keith Simpson, cientista forense indicado para auxiliar a investigação, compreendeu que a mosca só coloca seus ovos na carne morta quando ela cai a uma certa temperatura.

Em pouco tempo, o estágio de vida das larvas havia completado o ciclo e Simpson pôde determinar o tempo da morte. Rapidamente, um suspeito principal foi encontrado, acusado e condenado.
