Os jogos olímpicos

Desenvolvimento

A popularidade dos jogos olímpicos continuou no mundo antigo mesmo após o desaparecimento do império grego. Mas em 393 d.C. - o 293° jogos olímpicos e 1.170 anos depois dos jogos começarem, eles foram abolidos pelo imperador romano Teodósio I, pois havia proibido qualquer adoração a ídolos em santuários.

Mas foi somente em 1896 que eles ressurgiram, graças aos esforços de um jovem aristocrata francês, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, e do grego Dimitrios Vikelas. Os primeiros jogos olímpicos foram realizados em Atenas. Treze países participaram competindo em 43 eventos divididos em nove esportes. Pela primeira vez, uma maratona foi incluída. A corrida comemorou a vitória dos atenienses sobre os persas, quando o mensageiro Philippides correu desde as planícies de Marathon a Atenas com a notícia da vitória.
