Os jogos olímpicos de 2004

No verão de 2004, os XXVIII Jogos Olímpicos de Verão foram realizados no seu local de origem, Atenas. Esta foi a segunda vez que Atenas hospedou os jogos desde a inauguração das olimpíadas modernas em 1896.

Um grande projeto de construção foi feito para a realização dos Jogos, que envolveram 10.500 atletas e 3.000 equipes oficiais de 199 países. Afeganistão competiu pela primeira vez desde 1999, quando foi vetada do evento por ter rejeitado a participação de atletas femininas nas competições.

Os eventos aconteceram em 38 locais e representados por 28 esportes. Os jogos duraram 16 dias com 301 cerimônias com medalhas.

As mascotes oficiais de Atenas foram Phevos e Atena, dois irmãos inspirados nas bonecas da Grécia Antiga. Seus nomes vêm de dois deuses olímpicos: Phevos (também conhecido como Apolo), o deus da luz e da música; e Atena, a deusa da sabedoria e padroeira da cidade de Atenas.

George Michael compôs o tema da música oficial dos Jogos. Apesar de ter nascido em Londres, ele é descendente de gregos: seu nome verdadeiro é Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou.
